About us

Friends of Sussex Historic Churches trust

Formed in 1991 the Friends exist to give support to The Sussex Historic Churches Trust and promote interest in and knowledge of places of worship that are more than 100 years old and open for public worship.

The Trust relies entirely on voluntary efforts in fundraising, careful investment of its capital funds, some legacies and most importantly from the generosity of many people since it has no central funding grants.

In this way, it is able to help give support to the extent of some £70,000 each year, but the amount of grants is entirely dependent entirely upon income raised. As a Friend you can be a supporter of this effort.

Sussex has a fine heritage in religious buildings and, whilst a number of these are large and architecturally important, there are many small but historically valuable churches and buildings, including many of pre-conquest date.  Frequently these lie are in small rural parishes where the need is great but the worshippers few.

What we offer

There are three outings in the calendar year to help you discover and explore unfamiliar buildings, re-visit old favourites or learn more about the architecture, use and heritage of places of worship in Sussex – near and far. Our events can include church visits, lectures, fundraising activities and similar events.

In addition, all the members of Friends receive an Autumn Newsletter about the Trust's work, the Annual Report and an Invitation to the AGM.

Become a member of the Friends

If you value this unique heritage and think it worth maintaining, we invite you to become a member of The Sussex Historic Churches Trust.  In so doing you will make a valuable contribution towards the work of the trust and through them help in the maintenance and repair of the beautiful religious buildings of Sussex, so that they are handed on intact to future generations just as our ancestors have preserved them over the centuries.

Your contribution

Your contribution is an annual subscription of just £10 for an individual or £15 for a couple.

Your yearly membership fee not only adds to income but if you are a tax payer and choose to gift aid your yearly subscription then you can provide a welcome bonus for the use of the Trust in their work.
