Sussex Ride & Stride: Sussex Ride & Stride
9th September 2017

Visit Sussex's unique historic buildings, see our beautiful countryside, get some exercise and have fun with the family, in a group or as an indiviual entry.... what could be better?

The Sussex Ride & Stride is a sponsored ride (bike or horse) or walk in which people all over Sussex walk or cycle between churches, exploring and enjoying the countryside.

Fundraising to protect Sussex historic buildings

The money everyone raises through sponsorship helps us to save Sussex historic churches, chapels and meeting houses for future generations by helping to fund urgent repairs and undertake restoration works (find out more about our Grants).

You will also be helping your local Church as 50% of the sponsorship goes directly to your chosen Church, the other 50% to the SHCT fund.

Bear Grylls"Many historic churches, chapels and meeting houses are battling to survive. Roofs leak, ancient timbers rot and medieval stonework crumbles.

Now you can help by joining the Ride & Stride adventure, a sponsored bike ride or walk discovering beautiful churches, which also raise money for their repair and preservation."

You choose your route

The event is fairly unique in that there is no fixed route. So you get to choose which church or chapel is your start point, which is your end, and how many you visit in between... you can do as much or as little as you like across Sussex and also into neighbouring counties.

We hope that in choosing your own route you get to see the wonderful churches and chapels we have in the area and to explore parts of Sussex that you may not normally see.

Do you want a competitive edge?

For those of a competitive nature, and a bit of fun, we award a number of trophies to particpants, in various categories, based on the the number of churches visited. Find out more

When and where?

The Ride & Stride event takes place on the Second Saturday of September each year - this year that falls on Saturday 9 September 2017.

The event runs from 09:00 until 17:00. Any church or chapel, if it wishes to do so, may join in, and will be listed in the Places Open List.

Get involved

Whether rider (bicycle, horse) or walker, being part of the Sussex Ride & Stride is very easy. Simply read our easy to follow guide sheet to get started. Also start planning your route by taking a look at some of the great places you can visit.

Organisers

Ride & Stride is a great success because of the involvement of so many Sussex Churches, Chapels and Places of Worship. If you are an organiser for one of these, please see out briefing notes and make sure you have registered for the 2017 event.

Fundraising through Ride & Stride?

Created in 1982 there are now 31 County Trusts raising £1.5 million annually. Our Trust raised almost £55,000 in 2014. The money raised will be shared equally between the Trust and the church or chapel nominated by each participant. In Sussex over 600 buildings will be taking part, and some of them providing refreshments.
