Information on legacies for those wishing to make a bequest to Sussex Historic Churches Trust in their will Legacies & Bequests Remembering us in your will Legacies and bequests are an important contribution to the funds we have available for making grants to places of worship in Sussex that are in urgent need of repair or restoration. We are grateful for all the gifts we receive - whatever the size. Every gift is valuable and will make a difference to the number of churches we can help. If you are considering making your will (or revising your present will), the following information may be helpful. If your estate is taxable, the taxable portion will generally bear inheritance tax at 40%. Gifts to charities are tax free so the whole of the amount that you leave to a charity will benefit the charity. In addition, your estate may qualify for a lower rate of inheritance tax if the amount donated to charities overall is at least 10% of the value of the taxable estate. Please note that rules on Inheritance Tax are complicated; please always seek professional advice. If you choose to leave the Trust a specific sum of money, a suitable form of wording in your will would be, ‘I bequeath to the Sussex Historic Churches Trust, registered charity 282159, Rotten Row House, Rotten Row, Lewes, BN7 1TN, the sum of £x. ’ Alternatively, to ensure your gift keeps its value, you can leave a percentage sum of your estate: “I bequeath to the Sussex Historic Churches Trust, registered charity 282159, Rotten Row House, Rotten Row, Lewes, BN7 1TN a % share of the residue of my estate." Bequests to the Trust are invaluable in helping us save our architectural and ecclesiastical heritage. Sometimes a legacy might be left for listed churches. The Trust prefers legacies with no conditions because our Grants Committee chooses those churches most in need. If a church closes, it can become difficult to accept a bequest in a Will. But, of course, it’s up to you. If you have decided to support us, we would be grateful if you could let us know. Not only does this allow us to thank you but it helps us to plan our work with confidence.
